Baden-Baden is a German pub found at the end of Holland Village tucked somewhere between NYDC and Coffee Club, opposite Walla-Walla. The furniture is woody and indoors, there's a large TV screen that normally shows soccer games.
As a German joint, it specialises in, well, German fare. That is to say, beer and meat. Beer first. But for now, I'll just review the meat part. Specifically, Cheese Crackers and Pork Knuckles.
Cheese Crackers
S$10.90
Cheese crackers (picture above) are sausages with cheese inside. It comes served with sauerkraut and potatoes. Bite into a cheese cracker and the cheese oozes out to flavour the already enticing aroma of the sausage. Crunchy. (It's quite different, by the way, from smearing some cheese on top of the hot dogs you buy at NTUC and grilling that... as we found out at our CG bbq last week).
Sauerkrauts are served with both the pork knuckles and the cheese crackers, and provide a nice complement to both. It's a bit like Korean kimchi - sourish veggie stuff, just not so spicy, nor so much variety.
Pork Knuckles
S$29.00
It's a huge chunk of meat wrapped in crispy skin. A small knuckle is good for two persons, at least. Contrary to what the picture (below) may suggest, it's not just skin and bones. A simple knife cuts easily through the skin to slice the knuckle in two, showing a lot of tender pork inside. And it is tender. Tender and juicy. If you don't want to eat the fats, you'd need to scrape off that layer from below the skin, but the skin itself, if you don't dip it in the oil too much, is pretty crispy.
It was a full meal, just having both these dishes (plus of course the beers). Not much veggies, but then again, you don't go to a German joint for the veggies. They charge 10% service and 1% cess. No GST indicated on receipt.
Verdict: worth checking out the meaty stuff at Baden-Baden!
As for the beers, ah... it's too many to review now... another day lah... suffice to say for now, beers are 1-to-1 during happy hours (weekdays up til 9pm). i.e. 2 beers for the price of 1.
